UGC Mandates AICTE Approval for ODL/Online BBA, BMS, BCA Courses

According to a public notice released by the UGC, Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) that wish to offer programs in online or open-distance learning (ODL) formats must submit recommendations and approval for those programs that fall under the purview of regulatory bodies like the AICTE when applying to the UGC.

Higher education institutions (HEIs) that plan to offer BCA, BBA, and BMS programs starting in the July–August 2024 academic session must apply to AICTE for approval or recommendation to offer these programs online or through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and submit the application to UGC for approval.

The UGC (ODL Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020 stipulates that the Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) shall get the approval/recommendations for the programmes falling under the ambit of the respective statutory or regulatory authority or regulatory council for offering the programmes in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode and/or online mode, while submitting an application to the commission.

In order to ensure consistent quality and academic standards throughout Management and Computer Applications programs, the AICTE has decided to regulate HEIs offering BBA, BMS, and BCA courses starting in the academic year 2024–2025.

These regulations are modeled after postgraduate courses and programs (MCA/MBA). HEIs that are already recognized as having the right to offer BCA, BBA, and BMS programs with any specialization in online or ODL mode must get approval from AICTE to offer these programs and then submit an application to UGC for continued recognition of these applications beginning in the July–August 2024 academic year.
