Tesla’s car sales in Europe dropped sharply last month, even as the electric vehicle (EV) market in the region continued to grow, according to data released Tuesday.

Figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) show that Tesla sold 7,261 vehicles across 32 European countries in April, marking a 49% drop compared to 14,228 units sold in the same month last year. Meanwhile, overall battery-electric vehicle sales by all automakers rose by around 28%, while gasoline and diesel car sales declined.

This sharp decline highlights the challenges facing Tesla, including growing public backlash against CEO Elon Musk over his far-right political stances, which has led to protests and consumer boycotts. The brand is also grappling with other issues such as an aging product lineup and rising competition from rival EV makers, particularly from China.

One notable competitor, China’s SAIC — which owns several brands including the U.K.-based MG known for budget-friendly EVs — saw a 54% surge in sales in April, according to ACEA data.

Tesla's sales have also been affected by temporary factory shutdowns earlier this year to update its top-selling Model Y SUV, disrupting supply.

From January to April, Tesla’s total sales in Europe fell about 39% to 61,320 units, while the overall European car market remained largely stable over the same period.
