Meta and defense startup Anduril Industries team up to create augmented reality and AI-enabled battlefield gear, enhancing real-time control of autonomous syste
Meta and defense tech startup Anduril Industries announced a partnership on Thursday to develop mixed reality equipment for soldiers to control autonomous battlefield systems. Meta will integrate augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) into devices such as glasses, goggles, or visors, combined with Anduril’s Lattice data analytics platform, according to a joint statement.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted the company’s decade-long efforts in AI and AR, expressing pride in collaborating with Anduril to equip American servicemembers. Since Trump’s return to the White House, Zuckerberg has aligned more closely with the Republican administration, including policy shifts and personal investments like a $23 million Washington, D.C. home.
The partnership strengthens Meta’s ties to the U.S. military. Anduril founder Palmer Luckey, co-founder of Oculus (acquired by Facebook in 2014), said the project aims to turn soldiers into “technomancers” by merging technology with battlefield operations. Luckey left Facebook in 2017 amid controversies involving a lawsuit over Oculus tech and his support for pro-Trump online groups during the 2016 election, which was rare in Silicon Valley at the time.
Anduril’s Lattice platform uses AI to integrate data from thousands of sources, delivering real-time battlefield intelligence for better decision-making. With Trump promoting an “America First” agenda, major tech companies like Meta, OpenAI, and Palantir (founded by conservative billionaire Peter Thiel) are increasingly positioning themselves as champions of U.S. technological dominance. Meta has emphasized the importance of AI models in maintaining America’s edge over China in the global AI race.
