At its annual developer conference on May 20, Google placed artificial intelligence at the forefront, unveiling major enhancements to its Gemini AI models and showcasing innovations across Search, Android XR, and more.
Gemini App Enhancements:
Gemini Live is rolling out to Android and iOS users this week, featuring real-time interactions using the phone’s camera or screen. Deeper integration with Google services will let users access Maps, reminders, and more through conversational prompts. Gemini’s Deep Research mode now supports file and image uploads for richer, context-aware responses.
Imagen 4 & Veo 3:
Google introduced Imagen 4, its most advanced text-to-image model, which produces highly detailed visuals with accurate text rendering. Veo 3, a new text-to-video model, generates smooth motion and native soundtracks that sync with the visuals.
AI-Powered Search (AI Mode):
Search now includes interactive, personalised results, including AI-generated graphs and clothing previews. The tool also integrates Gmail for contextual content. AI Mode is now live for U.S. users.
Android XR & Agentic AI:
Google previewed its Android XR platform for smart glasses, with partners like Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. Project Mariner demonstrated agentic AI—autonomous systems that complete multi-step tasks like bookings.
Beam 3D Video Chat:
Google introduced Beam, a 3D telepresence tool offering realistic, in-person-like video calls. Beam devices, built with partners like Zoom and HP, are expected soon.
