Google Upgrades Gemini in Drive to Summarize Videos Automatically

Google is expanding the capabilities of its Gemini feature in Drive, enabling it to analyze and summarize videos stored in the cloud.

This update is designed to help users avoid the time-consuming task of watching lengthy meeting recordings, training sessions, product demonstrations, or user research footage. Instead of manually scrolling through videos, users can now request Gemini to deliver concise summaries and key takeaways.

Summarizing and Searching Video Content

The new functionality highlights the core messages and important points from each video. It also allows users to ask targeted questions to find specific details within the content.

Currently, this feature is only supported for users with English set as their default language.

Importantly, it will be turned on automatically and cannot be switched off by administrators or end users if their account includes an eligible Gemini subscription.

How to Use the New Video Tool

To access the feature, users simply open a video and click the Gemini icon in the top-right corner of the screen. This brings up a side panel with options such as “Summary of this content,” “Outline the key takeaways,” and “List action items.”

Users can also ask direct questions about the video to retrieve relevant highlights or specific details.

Availability and Compatibility

This video summarization capability is being rolled out to users subscribed to Google One AI Premium (now called AI Pro and higher). Over the coming weeks, it will also become available to Workspace users on Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, as well as those with Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-ons.

At present, the feature is not supported in the standalone Gemini app, which still only allows uploads of images and documents.
