Apple has filed a legal appeal against a European Union directive requiring it to open its tightly controlled ecosystem to competitors like Meta and Google, arguing that the mandate is unreasonable and inhibits innovation. The EU’s Digital Markets Act, unveiled in March, aims to curb the dominance of major tech firms.
In its statement, Apple criticized the interoperability rules, calling them "unreasonable, costly, and stifling to innovation." The company also warned that complying with the order could expose sensitive user data to third-party companies, creating serious privacy and security concerns for EU users.
Apple further claimed that the regulations unfairly single out the company and would hinder its ability to provide cutting-edge products and services in Europe, ultimately resulting in a diminished user experience for European customers.
Companies such as Meta, Google, Spotify, and Garmin have requested access to Apple user data. The legal battle is expected to drag on for years, but Apple must adhere to the EU’s requirements in the meantime.
As part of the order, the European Commission has directed Apple to allow competing smartphone, headphone, and VR headset makers to access its technology and mobile operating system, enabling them to interface with iPhones and iPads. The Commission has also laid out a structured timeline for Apple to address interoperability requests from app developers.
