Amazon may boost its investment in Anthropic beyond the $8B already committed, aiming to solidify its position in AI and outpace rivals like Google and OpenAI,
Amazon is reportedly considering making another multibillion-dollar investment in AI company Anthropic to deepen their strategic alliance, according to the Financial Times, which cited sources familiar with the discussions. The potential move would build on the $8 billion Amazon has already committed to the startup as of November last year.
While Anthropic declined to comment and Amazon did not respond to Reuters’ request for a statement, the report could not be independently verified by Reuters at the time of publication.
Amazon first invested $4 billion in Anthropic in November 2023, doubling down on its commitment to generative AI and competing with industry leaders like OpenAI. The latest investment, if finalized, would help Amazon maintain its status as one of Anthropic’s largest stakeholders—surpassing Google, which has already invested over $3 billion, according to FT.
“We quickly saw that we shared several core ambitions,” said Dan Grossman, Amazon’s vice-president of worldwide corporate development, in comments to FT. “The scale of our current investment reflects our commitment.”
Amazon is intensifying efforts to establish itself as a major player in artificial intelligence, especially as competitors like OpenAI and Google have made significant early gains with consumer-facing AI products. Tech firms across the board are ramping up AI investments and pursuing innovative strategies to attract top AI talent.
