Shubman Gill Out!: BCCI’s Update Ahead of India vs. Afghanistan Clash

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has delivered concerning news regarding the star batter, Shubman Gill, who is currently battling dengue fever. As a result, he is expected to miss India’s second match in the Cricket World Cup 2023 against Afghanistan.

Gill’s absence from the opening match against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai was already confirmed due to his prolonged illness. In his absence, Ishan Kishan stepped in as the opening batter alongside India’s captain, Rohit Sharma.

A statement from the BCCI reads as follows: “Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be traveling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter, who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai, is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team.”

India’s skipper, Rohit Sharma, provided insight into Shubman Gill’s condition, stating, “The mood is pretty good as it is before the start of every big tournament. We’ve come into this tournament prepared really well, so quite confident about us skill-wise. We’re looking forward to the game. Everybody’s fit. Gill is not 100 percent, but he’s sick. So, there’s no injury concern. He is not feeling well. We are monitoring him on a daily basis. We’re going to give him every chance to recover and see how he feels. So, he’s not ruled out yet.”

In Shubman Gill’s absence, Ishan Kishan is expected to open alongside Rohit Sharma in the upcoming clash against Afghanistan. Kishan, a left-handed batter, faced a challenging time in the match against Australia and will be eager to turn the tide in his favor against Afghanistan.

With Shubman Gill unavailable, Shreyas Iyer is likely to make an appearance in the middle-order during India’s second World Cup game. He, too, had a tough outing against Australia, being dismissed for a duck.
