Renowned Classical Singer Ustad Rashid Khan Passes Away at 55

In a profound loss for the world of music, maestro Ustad Rashid Khan, a distinguished classical singer belonging to the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, breathed his last at a Kolkata hospital. The 55-year-old musician had been undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, and his health condition took a downturn following a cerebral attack last month.

The news of Ustad Rashid Khan’s demise was confirmed by officials at the Kolkata-based hospital where he was undergoing treatment. Despite their best efforts, the celebrated vocalist succumbed to his illness at approximately 3:45 PM. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.

Born into the esteemed Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, Ustad Rashid Khan was the great-grandson of the gharana’s founder, Inayat Hussain Khan. Known for his mesmerizing performances and mastery over classical music, Khan had earned accolades and a devoted following over the years.

Expressing her deep condolences, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated, “I heard about his death. This is a great loss for the entire country and the entire music fraternity. I am in a lot of pain as I still can’t believe that Rashid Khan is no more.” Banerjee further announced that the maestro would be accorded a gun salute and state honors before his last rites, scheduled for Wednesday.

Ustad Rashid Khan’s body will be kept at a mortuary before being taken to Rabindra Sadan on Wednesday, where admirers and fans can pay their last respects to the departed maestro. The music community mourns the loss of a legend, recognizing Ustad Rashid Khan’s significant contributions to classical music and his lasting impact on the cultural heritage of India.
