In a significant diplomatic move, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to embark on a two-day visit to Indonesia to participate in the 10th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus). The meeting, scheduled from November 16 to 17, will bring together the 10-nation ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and its eight dialogue partners, including India, to discuss emerging regional security scenarios.
During the ADMM-Plus, Rajnath Singh is expected to articulate India’s perspectives on addressing major security challenges confronting the region. The platform includes ASEAN countries — Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam — along with dialogue partners India, China, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Russia, and the United States.
The defence ministry stated, “During the meeting, which will take place on November 16, the defence minister will address the forum on regional and international security issues.” Indonesia, the current chair of ADMM-Plus, is hosting the event.
In addition to his participation in the meeting, Rajnath Singh is expected to engage in bilateral meetings with the defence ministers of other participating countries on the sidelines. These discussions will cover various aspects of defence cooperation between India and its regional counterparts.
India has been a dialogue partner of the ASEAN since 1992, and the ADMM-Plus was inaugurated in Hanoi in October 2010. Since 2017, the ADMM-Plus ministers have convened annually to strengthen regional security cooperation. The upcoming meeting provides an opportunity for India to actively contribute to discussions on regional security and collaborate with ASEAN and its dialogue partners on shared challenges.
