PM Modi Expresses Concern: ’17 Days a Long Time,’ Tells Uttarkashi Tunnel Workers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked to the 41 workers rescued from the Uttarakhand Silkyara tunnel on Tuesday, following 17 days of painstaking efforts by the Centre, state governments, and other agencies.

Congratulating them on their triumph, Prime Minister Modi said 17 days is a long time and it was admirable that the workers did not give up hope. “”We have the blessings of Kedarnath, Badrinath. Had something untoward happened, I can’t describe how we could have taken that. You all have shown exemplary bravery,” PM Modi stated.

“You had each other’s back throughout the crisis. At times like this, it is not rare to get into a little tu tu-main main. This happens even in a railway compartment. But you all have remained united,” PM Modi said.

A worker informed PM Modi that they were never worried down there inside the cage. “We all came from different states, but we stuck together like brothers.” We used to share meals. We used to stroll through the 2.5-kilometer tunnel after supper. “We used to do yoga in the morning because there was nothing else to do inside,” the worker explained.

PM Modi responded to the worker’s name of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Union Minister of State General VK Singh (Retd), saying, “Yes, VK Singh was there the entire time.” He demonstrated his military training and discipline.”

The 17-day attempt to rescue 41 people trapped beneath an under-construction tunnel drew international attention as international tunneling expert Arnold Dix was brought in for the mission. A heavy-duty auger equipment developed in the United States was dispatched, but it failed many times. Rat-hole miners were then deployed, and after 24 hours of work, the 41 men were rescued.

PM Modi lauded the rescuers, tweeting, “The success of our laborer brothers’ rescue operation in Uttarkashi is making everyone emotional.” I’d want to express my gratitude to the friends who were stuck in the tunnel for their bravery and patience. “I wish you all well good and health.”

“It is a matter of great satisfaction that after a long wait, these friends of ours will now meet their loved ones. The patience and courage that all these families have shown in this challenging time cannot be appreciated enough,” PM Modi wrote on X.

After all of them were rescued and brought to the Community Health Centre in Chinyalisaur, PM Modi spoke to them over the telephone and asked about their wellbeing.
