Parliament’s Winter Session: Key Spotlight on Waqf

In the upcoming winter session of Parliament, which is anticipated to see a new conflict between the government and the opposition over violence in Manipur and the accusations against Sebi chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch, the Narendra Modi government will attempt to introduce five new bills and pass ten pieces of legislation, including the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill.

The winter session will begin November 25 and end on December 20.

The Indian government has listed five new bills, including The Coastal Shipping Bill and The Indian Ports Bill, 2024. The Coastal Shipping Bill aims to promote coasting trade and encourage Indian flag vessels for national security and commercial purposes. T

he Indian Ports Bill, 2024 aims to secure port conservation and security and pollution control in line with international obligations and statutory compliance. The government’s controversial Waqf bill, which is currently being reviewed by a joint committee of Parliament, is expected to pass in the winter session.

The opposition member of the panel, led by BJP lawmaker Jagdambika Pal, has expressed a desire for more time to study the bill. The Waqf committee must submit its report by November 29 to pass the bill.
