In a tragic incident, a Pakistan Navy helicopter crashed in the southwestern city of Gwadar, Balochistan province. The crash, believed to be caused by a suspected mechanical fault, resulted in the loss of three crew members. The accident occurred during a training flight, shedding light on the challenges faced in the region due to ongoing separatist insurgency. Here are the details of the unfortunate incident.

  • Aircraft Type: The helicopter involved in the crash was a Sea King aircraft, commonly used by the Pakistan Navy.
  • Preliminary Report: According to a preliminary report obtained by AFP from a military source, the Sea King aircraft encountered an engine fire and lost its rear tail during takeoff.

Casualties: Tragically, the helicopter crash resulted in the loss of three lives. The casualties included two officers and one enlisted man. The navy spokesman attributed the accident to a possible technical malfunction.

Context and Region: Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province, has witnessed heavy militarization due to significant Chinese investment projects in the area. These projects have been the target of attacks by separatist militants operating in the region. It’s important to note that Balochistan has been grappling with a separatist insurgency for several decades.

Previous Incidents: This unfortunate incident is not isolated. In September of the previous year, six servicemen lost their lives when their helicopter crashed in the town of Khost in Balochistan. Additionally, a month earlier, six more servicemen, including a top army commander, lost their lives in a helicopter crash during flood relief operations in the same province.
