Over 1500 OBC students benefited from MPhil, PhD scholarships in 2022: Govt

The MPhil and PhD OBC Scholarships under NF-OBC assist 1570 students in total in the 2022–2023 fiscal year. This is the most recipients in the last five years.

According to statistics presented by the government in Lok Sabha, 679 students benefited in the 2018-19 fiscal year, while 1192 students would benefit in the 2019-20 fiscal year. The figure was raised to 1233 in the 2020-21 fiscal year and 1338 in the 2021-22 fiscal year.

This year, the state with the most beneficiaries was Uttar Pradesh, with 325 pupils, followed by Kerala with 120 students, West Bengal with 114, Bihar with 97, and Rajasthan with 96. The states/UTs with less than ten benefiting students were Chandigarh (1), Arunachal Pradesh (1), Sikkim (6), Tripura (7), and Goa (9).

The data was released after a member of the Lok Sabha, Kodikunnil Suresh, asked the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment whether the Government is aware of increased delays in stipends of the scholarship scheme meant to help MPhil and PhD scholars from Other Backward Class (OBC) groups in 2014.

In response, Virendra Kumar stated that the Scheme of National Fellowship for OBCs was started in 2014-15, and that by the end of 2022-23, stipends/fellowships had been distributed to all qualified recipients. “In order to ensure timely release, the system of Central Nodal Agency (CNA) has been adopted and the CNA ensures release of stipends /fellowships to scholars within the prescribed time limit. National Backward Class Finance and Development Corporation (NBCFDC) has been appointed CNA w.e.f. October 1, 2022,” his response stated.
