The Festival of Lights, Diwali marks new beginnings and the triumph of "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, which means a row of lights. It is one of the most popular festivals in India and South-East Asia and is celebrated with great joy, warmth, and shining grandeur. It is an occasion of high spiritual value as it signifies the opening of our own true light which sparkles within us and sharing this glow with others as well.
The festival is widely associated with Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity, and Ganesha, god of wisdom and the remover of obstacles, with many other regional traditions connecting the holiday to Sita and Rama, Vishnu, Krishna, Durga, Shiva, Kali, Hanuman, Kubera, Yama, Yami, Dhanvantari, or Vishvakarman. Furthermore, it is a celebration of the day Rama returned to his kingdom in Ayodhya with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana after defeating the demon Ravana in Lanka and serving 14 years of exile.
The festival falls on the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu lunar month Kartika, which happens between mid-October to mid-November.
The celebrations for Deepavali usually extend over a period of five days, and the main festival night of Diwali coincides with the new moon night. The festivity starts with Dhanteras, followed by Naraka Chaturdasi or small Diwali, and then Diwali on the third day. Each day of the festival has its unique significance that is as follows-
