Kim Jong Un’s Visit to Russian Fighter Jet Plant Amid Arms Deal Speculation

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s visit to a Russian military aviation factory in Komsomolsk-on-Amur has sparked global interest, coming just days after his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both nations, facing international sanctions for different reasons, have raised concerns about possible arms agreements during Kim’s visit.

Kim Jong’s Arrival in Russia

Kim Jong Un arrived in Komsomolsk-on-Amur in Russia’s far east aboard a bullet-proof train. His arrival was marked with a warm welcome, featuring flowers, music, a dance group, and ceremonial loaves of bread.

The Purpose of Kim Jong’s Visit

While North Korea seeks Moscow’s assistance in developing its missile program, reports suggest that Russia is interested in purchasing North Korean ammunition for potential use in Ukraine. Kim’s visit includes a tour of a military and civil aviation firm in the key Russian industrial center.

The Aviation Plant Visit

Reports indicate that Kim Jong Un visited an aviation plant named after Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, renowned as the first human in space. This plant is responsible for producing Russia’s Sukhoi Su-35 and Su-57 fighter aircraft.

Putin’s Announcement

Following their summit at the Vostochny cosmodrome, Putin announced that Kim would visit factories producing both civilian and combat aviation equipment in Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Putin also mentioned Kim’s plans to visit Vladivostok, where Russian warships would be on display. He highlighted a military component in Vladivostok, showcasing the capabilities of the Pacific Fleet.

Kim’s Extended Visit

Kim’s visit to Russia’s far east is expected to last several more days, as confirmed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. Furthermore, it was confirmed that President Putin has accepted Kim’s invitation to visit North Korea, strengthening their diplomatic ties.

Exchange of Gifts

During their summit, Putin gifted Kim a high-quality rifle produced in Russia, receiving a North Korean-made rifle in return. Additionally, Kim received a space suit glove that had been to space multiple times.

International Concerns

Kim’s visit, with its implications for arms agreements, has raised alarms among Western countries. The White House, in particular, expressed concern about any arms exports from North Korea to Russia, emphasizing that such actions would directly violate multiple UN Security Council resolutions, including those adopted by Russia itself.

US Consults Allies

The US National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, engaged in discussions with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts regarding the Putin-Kim meeting. They jointly voiced their concerns over the potential arms deal and its implications in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
