Kavaratti’s First On-grid Solar Power Plant to Save Rs. 250 Crores

On January 3, 2024, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi dedicated to the country the solar power plant at Kavaratti, the region’s first on-grid solar facility using state-of-the-art Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) technology.

These two Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) plants feature a combined solar capacity of 1.7 MW and an innovative 1.4 MWh battery storage facility.

The solar power plant, a major step toward sustainable energy solutions for the archipelago, will help reduce reliance on the diesel-based power generation facility in Kavaratti. The Lakshadweep Energy Development Agency (LEDA) will now use power from these solar facilities, signaling a significant change away from diesel-based power and toward a more sustainable, environmentally friendly energy source for the region.

The program is expected to provide commercial savings of roughly Rs. 250 crores during its expected technical lifespan. The significant decrease in diesel use of up to 190 lakh litres and the offset of 58,000 tons of CO2 emissions highlight its critical role in promoting green energy and developing a cleaner and more sustainable future for Lakshadweep.

SunSource Energy supplied the project’s Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) expertise.

Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI), a Miniratna Category-I Central Public Sector Unit under the administrative control of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, is engaged in the promotion and development of various renewable energy resources, particularly solar and wind energy, as well as renewable energy (RE) – based storage systems, power trading, R&D, and RE-based products such as Green Hydrogen, Green Ammonia, and RE-powered electric vehicles.

The company is one of the nodal authorities for the execution of several MNRE initiatives. The firm also has a Category 1 power trading license and is operating in this arena by trading Solar/Wind/Hybrid/RTC/BSES electricity generated by projects established under the schemes it is implementing.
