Jailed AAP MP Sanjay Singh Allowed to Sign Papers for Rajya Sabha

A Delhi court has permitted imprisoned Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh to sign paperwork for his re-election to the Rajya Sabha. Sanjay Singh’s tenure will expire on January 27.

An application was filed in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court requesting permission to collect Singh’s signatures on a ‘Undertaking,’ which is said to be necessary in conjunction with obtaining a ‘No Dues Certificate’ from Rajya Sabha.

The order was issued by Special Judge MK Nagpal in response to an application filed by the politician, who stated that his current term as a Rajya Sabha member expires on January 27 and that the Returning Officer issued a notice on January 2 for the conduct of the election and nominations for the same are to be submitted by January 9, news agency PTI reported.

The application asked the Tihar Jail superintendent to order Singh to sign the documents.

“It is being directed that if the documents are presented by counsel for accused before jail authorities on January 6, 2024, the jail superintendent shall ensure that the signatures of the accused are permitted to be taken on said documents and he is also permitted to meet his Counsel for half-an-hour to discuss the modalities in connection with filing of the said nomination,” PTI quoted the judge as saying in an order passed on Thursday.

Sanjay Singh was detained by the anti-money laundering agency on October 4. The ED claims Singh was a significant figure in the development and execution of the now-cancelled excise regime, which favored select liquor makers, distributors, and retailers for monetary reasons. The AAP leader has categorically denied the accusation.
