Indian Railways to Launch ‘Super-App’

Indian Railways plans to build an all-in-one’super app’ that would include numerous passenger services in one spot. This new software will allow users to book tickets, purchase platform passes, and check train timetables.

The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) is developing a new application to complement the existing platform of the IRCTC’s systems.

According to a senior official, IRCT would continue to serve as the link between CRIS and ticket buyers. The planning for the super app and IRCTC is currently continuing.

Railway passengers use different applications and websites to enjoy various railway services such as IRCTC Rail Connect for ticket transactions, IRCTC eCatering Food on Track for meal delivery, Rail Madad for feedback, UTS for unreserved tickets, and National Train Enquiry System for train tracking.

IRCTC Rail Connect application has over 100 million downloads making it one of the most utilised railway applications and it has the exclusive rights for reserved ticket booking.

According to the officials, IRCTC sees the super app as another avenue for earnings. Third-party travel booking depends on IRCTC for train reservations as it holds the dominant position in online ticket booking.

The IRCTC declared a net profit of Rs 1,111.26 crore and sales of Rs 4,270.18 crore in fiscal year 2023-24. According to Indian Railways’ annual report, ticket sales, which processed over 453 million bookings, accounted for 30.33 percent of total income.

The UTS program, which manages platform ticket and season pass downloads, has been downloaded over ten million times.

CRIS creates and maintains critical software systems for the operations and services of Indian railroads.
