Ronita Lama, a tribal woman from Darjeeling, faced caste-based abuse and threats in her rented flat — simply because she belongs to a tribal background and speaks a different language.
According to reports, two women living in the same building hurled casteist slurs at Ronita and her friends without any provocation, falsely accused them of illegal activities, and even threatened physical violence. All of this stemmed from the fact that they belong to a minority community.
This is not just about insults or arguments — this is outright discrimination, and it is a criminal offense under the law.
The incident once again raises a serious question: How much discrimination still exists in our society based on ethnic identity and language? Such attacks on tribal and minority communities are not only painful, but also challenge the very core of our democratic values.
There is now growing public demand for the administration to take strict action in this case and to ensure justice for Ronita. Because every individual deserves the right to live with dignity — free from fear or discrimination.
