Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, speaking on Kargil Vijay Diwas at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, asserted that Operation Sindoor sent a strong signal to Pakistan — that those backing terrorism would not be spared. Referring to the Pahalgam terror attack as a grievous blow to the nation, he stated, “This time, India chose action over mourning. Our response was sharp and decisive.”
He emphasized that India’s firm stance and the unrestricted support from the government enabled the Army to carry out a fitting surgical strike. “Any threat to India’s unity, sovereignty, or people will be met with a strong reply. This is the new normal,” Gen. Dwivedi declared.
Highlighting the success of Operation Sindoor, he said the Army had eliminated nine high-value terrorist targets in Pakistan without any collateral damage, effectively dismantling key terror infrastructure and foiling Pakistan’s hostile intentions.
He noted that India’s commitment to peace had been betrayed by Pakistan’s actions on May 8 and 9, which were firmly countered by Indian forces. “Our air defence acted as an impenetrable shield against missile and drone threats,” he added.
Gen. Dwivedi also spoke of the Army’s modernization efforts. He announced the approval of the Rudra Brigade, a comprehensive combat unit combining infantry, armoured divisions, artillery, special forces, and unmanned aerial systems — all geared for logistical and tactical support. The newly established Bhairav Light Commando Unit, he said, is always on standby to strike and surprise enemies at the border.
He further detailed the Army’s growing technological capabilities: each infantry battalion now includes a drone platoon, and a new Shaktiban Artillery Regiment is being developed with drone, counter-drone, and loiter munition technology. Every artillery regiment will soon have a composite battery with these systems. Additionally, efforts are underway to equip the Army’s air defence with indigenously developed missiles.
Recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in last year’s silver jubilee of the Kargil victory, Gen. Dwivedi said the event’s importance has grown beyond the military, becoming a day of national pride. “India remains secure because of the sacrifices made by our soldiers on those icy heights. We honour their bravery, dedication, and unyielding spirit,” he concluded.
