The Agra zila panchayat has unanimously approved a proposal to rename two prominent localities: Fatehabad town will be renamed Sindoorpuram, and Badshahi Bagh will become Brahmapuram. This decision, awaiting final approval from the Uttar Pradesh state government, forms part of a larger initiative across India aimed at replacing colonial-era place names with those that resonate with local culture and history. The move is intended to restore indigenous pride and reflect the region’s rich heritage.

The proposal was brought forward by zila panchayat chairperson Manju Bhadoria, who explained that the existing names are reminders of India’s colonial past. Fatehabad was historically known as Samugarh, and the new name Sindoorpuram is intended to revive this traditional identity. Meanwhile, Brahmapuram draws inspiration from the BrahMos missile, symbolizing India’s defense capabilities, and the Hindu deity Lord Brahma, reflecting spiritual roots. The renaming signifies a fusion of India’s cultural legacy with its modern achievements.

Chairperson Bhadoria emphasized the importance of moving away from colonial legacies embedded in place names to strengthen connections with India’s historical and cultural origins. Once the state government grants approval, the new names will be officially adopted, marking a significant milestone in Agra’s local identity. This initiative is part of a broader trend seen nationwide, where place names are being revised to better reflect India’s indigenous narratives and patriotic spirit.
