Indrani Tahbildar, a 44-year-old leader of the Bharatiya Janta Party’s (BJP) Kisan Morcha from Assam, reportedly died by suicide in Guwahati on August 12, 2023. The alleged cause was the circulation of explicit photos of her on social media. She had been serving as the Kisan Morcha secretary for the Golaghat district.
The incident occurred around 5:40 PM in Guwahati’s Bamunimaidan area, as confirmed by officials from the Guwahati police station. Despite no visible external injuries, Indrani Tahbildar was found unconscious and was declared dead upon arrival at a local hospital. A subsequent post-mortem examination at Gauhati Medical College and Hospitals (GMCH) is underway for further investigation.
While family members claim suicide, confirmation will await the post-mortem report. Preliminary inquiries suggest the possibility of her ingesting a poisonous substance. Guwahati’s Chandmari police station is leading the investigation into whether this was an accidental death or a suicide, as informed by Central Guwahati deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Dipak Choudhury.
Family members have not accused anyone of her death, and there have been no formal complaints filed. However, colleagues of Tahbildar have shared that she confided in them about being blackmailed with compromising photos. These colleagues have implicated Anurag Chaliha, an invitee member of the BJP’s Kisan Morcha, in allegedly contributing to her suicide. They suggest that threats of sharing the explicit photos on social media might have driven her to this tragic end.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Pushkin Jain from Golaghat has been informed of the incident and is providing support for the investigation, which is being carried out by the Guwahati police. Indrani Tahbildar had previously held positions as the vice president of Assam BJP’s Chamber of Commerce and the treasurer of Kisan Morcha. Sources from within the party suggest that she had been engaged in an extramarital affair with a senior BJP leader who had been residing at her house as a tenant.
