IIT Madras Suspends Faculty in Wake of PhD Research Scholar’s Suicide

IIT Madras has suspended professor Ashish Kumar Sen in response to the recommendations of a five-member inquiry panel that reviewed the March 31 suicide of PhD research scholar Sachin Kumar Jain.

Students and family members said that Professor Sen’s abuse drove the victim to this drastic measure. Sachin’s PhD supervisor was Professor Sen.

After student demonstrations on campus, IIT Madras organized a five-member inquiry team in April in response to the victim’s brother Bhawesh Kumar’s calls for a comprehensive probe. Former DGP G Thilagavathy chaired the inquiry panel.

“Professor Ashish Sen has been suspended based on the direction of the board of governors,” IIT Madras stated in a statement. The institution is following all of the proper processes.”

The students’ body at IIT Madras praised the college management for taking “strong and courageous action” against one of their friends. “This is a victory for many students who came together to protest Sachin’s suicide,” they stated in a statement. “The truth will always win.”

Four IIT Madras students committed suicide earlier this year, in February and March. A following wellness survey conducted on campus indicated that 2% of students were stressed.
