IIT Madras Introduces ‘Sanjaya’ – A Location Intelligence Platform

On Thursday, January 18, 2024, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) Center of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS) in Haryana unveiled a brand-new location intelligence platform named “Sanjaya.”

The high-frequency accident zone data visualization will assist road-owning authorities, law enforcement, emergency care providers, and other road safety stakeholders in planning focused actions in Haryana.

Sanjaya will offer a centralized platform for stakeholders to visualize accident black areas and developing black spots, enabling them to assess the type and location of necessary actions. Furthermore, the platform offers capabilities for doing point radius, cluster, kilometer, and corridor analyses along with trend and heatmap visualizations.

Sanjeev Kaushal IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Haryana, welcomed this IIT Madras project, saying, “Sanjaya is an important tool designed to provide nuanced insights and targeted strategies towards making roads safer.” Additionally, we will focus on the areas where there are more crashes, and Sanjaya will assist in identifying those crucial hotspots.

At the moment, India leads the globe in both traffic deaths and collision rates. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) released crash statistics for 2022, showing that 5% of India’s roads—National and State Highways—accounted for around 60% of all fatalities.

Eighty-four percent of all road collision deaths in the nation occur in the working age range of 18 to 60. This represents a huge socioeconomic cost to the country and has serious consequences for the emotional and psychological impact on families and society at large.

Important attributes

  • Assessments of blackspots and newly forming blackspots nationwide using maps, arranged according to police, district, and state borders.
  • Data is presented visually and in the form of infographics to help visualize crash trends in a targeted area.

Professor Venkatesh Balasubramanian, Head of CoERS and RBG Labs, Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras, who is coordinating this initiative, elaborated on the platform: “To reduce road accident fatalities, planning target-specific interventions to mitigate road traffic accidents is important.” Any intervention must be based on data so that we not only identify the problems on the road but also implement changes that are viable in the long term,”.

“Sanjaya is a platform to get actionable intelligence for jurisdictional leaders. This will empower stakeholders across Haryana to visualise district-wise high-frequency accident zones and aid in preparing an action plan for targeted rectification,” the professor added.
