As the trend of using Himalayan salt rises, experts warn of increasing iodine deficiency, urging people to understand the significance of iodised salt and make
With changing lifestyle choices and growing fascination for natural alternatives, Himalayan salt has become a popular item in kitchens today. Its pink hue and claims of being "natural" or "pure" have made it a favourite among health-conscious individuals. But according to a leading gastroenterologist, this rising trend may be quietly causing a serious health issue the return of iodine deficiency.
Iodine is a require nutrient that supports thyroid function, metabolism, and healthy growth. For years, iodised salt took a major role in keeping iodine-related disorders under control, especially in India where deficiency was once widespread. But now, as more people switch to Himalayan salt and other venerable varieties, they may unknowingly be missing out on this essential element.
The concern isn’t about the salt itself but the lack of iodine in it. Himalayan salt, despite being rich in trace minerals, doesn't have enough iodine to meet daily needs. Over time, this can lead to side effect like tiredness, weight gain, neck swelling (goitre), and in children, even problems with brain development.
The doctor emphasizes that while it's okay to use Himalayan salt for its taste or appearance, it shouldn't fully replace iodised salt unless iodine is being consumed from other reliable sources like seafood, dairy, or supplements. Unfortunately, many people are unaware of this gap in their diet.
This warning comes not to scare, but to inform. Health trends can be positive, but only when backed by complete understanding. So before ditching iodised salt completely, it’s wise to pause and think about what your body truly needs. After all, a small pinch of the right salt can go a long way in helping a big health problem.
