India currently has over 1,000 active COVID-19 cases, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Of these, 752 have been detected recently. Delhi has seen a sharp increase, with 104 active cases—99 of which were reported in the past week.

Kerala leads in active cases with 430, followed by Maharashtra (209), Delhi (104), and Karnataka (47). Maharashtra has recorded four recent COVID-related fatalities, Kerala two, and Karnataka one. Several states and Union Territories—including Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir—have reported no active cases at present.

INSACOG data indicates that India has recorded one case of the new COVID-19 variant NB.1.8.1 and four cases of LF.7. Both are classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “Variants Under Monitoring,” not as “Variants of Concern” or “Variants of Interest.” These variants have been linked to recent spikes in infections in China and parts of Asia.

Among current cases in India, the JN.1 variant is most prevalent, accounting for 53% of samples, followed by BA.2 at 26%, and other Omicron sublineages at 20%.

In response, the Delhi government, led by Rekha Gupta, has issued an advisory directing hospitals to ensure the availability of beds, oxygen supplies, key medicines, and vaccines. Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said efforts are underway to determine whether infected individuals are Delhi residents or recent travelers. Hospitals are required to keep ventilators, Bi-PAP machines, oxygen concentrators, and PSA plants fully operational.
