The Jnanpith selection committee announced on Saturday that renowned Urdu poet, director, and lyricist Gulzar and Sanskrit scholar Jagadguru Rambhadracharya will receive the coveted 58th Jnanpith Award. The Jnanpith selection committee’s official announcement said, “It has been decided to give the award (for 2023) to eminent writers from two languages: Sanskrit litterateur Jagadguru Rambhadracharya and well-known Urdu litterateur Shri Gulzar.”
The press release from the official selection commitee recognized Gulzar for the award, and said, “Along with his long film journey, Gulzar has been setting new milestones in the field of literature. In poetry, he invented a new genre ‘Triveni’ which is a non-mukaffa poem of three lines. Gulzar has always created something new through his poetry. For some time now he has also been paying serious attention to children’s poetry.”
About Gulzar
Gulzar is a well-known figure in both the film and literature worlds. He is regarded as one of the best Urdu poets of his day. He has written poetry and songs for innumerable films throughout the course of his six-decade career. He has previously earned the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the Padma Bhushan, the Sahitya Akademi Award, an Oscar, a Grammy award, and several National Film Awards. Gulzar has also directed several films, including Mere Apne, Parichay, Aandhi, Mausam, and Lekin.
Gulzar’s daughter, Meghna Gulzar, is a writer and director. Her most recent film, Sam Bahadur, co-starred Vicky Kaushal. Gulzar wrote the lyrics for the film.
Concurrently, the founder and leader of Tulsi Peeth in Chitrakoot is Rambhadracharya. He is a prominent Hindu spiritual leader, professor, and author of over 100 books.
Last year, Goan writer Damodar Mauzo won the coveted honor.
