Foxconn Halts Apple iPhone Production Near Chennai Due to Cyclone ‘Michaung’

In the wake of Cyclone ‘Michaung,’ Foxconn, the Taiwanese company responsible for manufacturing Apple iPhones, has temporarily halted production at its facility near Chennai. The decision comes as heavy rains, triggered by the cyclonic storm, disrupt normal operations.

As of now, Foxconn has not made a final decision on whether it will resume iPhone production on Tuesday, according to reports from Reuters. The company has been actively manufacturing iPhones at its plant in Sriperumbudur since August.

The impact of Cyclone ‘Michaung’ has significantly affected life in Chennai and neighboring districts in Tamil Nadu. Streets are waterlogged, and key infrastructures, including airport runways and railway tracks, are submerged due to incessant rainfall.

The cyclonic storm, which currently lies near Chennai and Puducherry, has led to the closure of educational institutions in Chennai on Tuesday, as announced by the MK Stalin government. Anticipating heavy rainfall, the government has also advised private companies to enable employees to work from home in affected regions on December 5.

While essential services such as police, fire service, local bodies, medical facilities, power supply, and transportation will continue to operate, the adverse weather conditions have prompted precautionary measures.

Cabinet ministers Udhayanidhi Stalin and Ma Subramanian visited affected areas in Chennai to oversee relief activities. Additionally, ten teams comprising 250 NDRF personnel have been deployed for rescue efforts in the impacted districts.

The Chennai airport operations were suspended from 9:40 am to 11 pm, with approximately 70 flights canceled due to non-stop rains. The runway and tarmac remain closed because of waterlogging, as reported by the Airport Authority of India.

The situation continues to be monitored closely, and decisions regarding the resumption of operations, both in terms of manufacturing and daily life, will depend on the evolving conditions caused by Cyclone ‘Michaung.’
