“Bambai Meri Jaan” Producer Farhan Akhtar Clarifies: Not a Story About Dawood Ibrahim or Haji Mastan

Farhan Akhtar and Rensil D’Silva, the creative minds behind the web series “Bambai Meri Jaan,” recently addressed misconceptions about their show. In an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times, they emphasized that the series is not centered around notorious gangsters Dawood Ibrahim or Haji Mastan. Instead, it presents a fresh, fictional narrative within the backdrop of Mumbai’s underworld.

When discussing the allure of crime dramas, Farhan Akhtar highlighted the intrigue in understanding criminal behavior. He stated that viewers are drawn to such shows because they are curious about the minds of individuals who engage in criminal activities. These shows offer insight into the workings of such minds.

Addressing the persistent question of whether the series revolves around gangsters Dawood Ibrahim or Haji Mastan, show creator Rensil D’Silva clarified that it does not. He acknowledged that references to these figures may have emerged due to Hussain Zaidi’s involvement in the show. However, he stressed that the series is entirely fictional, emphasizing that every work of fiction draws inspiration from real-life elements.

Hussain Zaidi, known for his extensive reporting on the underworld and authorship of books like “Class of 83” and “Mafia Queens of Mumbai,” is credited with the story of “Bambai Meri Jaan.” Several of his works have been adapted into cinematic productions.

Farhan Akhtar discussed the challenges the production team faced during the making of “Bambai Meri Jaan.” The COVID-19 pandemic posed a significant obstacle, leading to two production halts. Lockdowns and restrictions on filming due to the pandemic delayed the project. Additionally, the team had to contend with the aftermath of Cyclone Tauktae in 2021, which destroyed their set. Despite these setbacks, the team’s perseverance and dedication allowed them to overcome these obstacles.

The series stars Kay Kay Menon and Avinash Tiwary in lead roles, portraying an honest cop and his son Dara, who aspires to become Mumbai’s top gangster. Kritika Kamra plays the role of Habiba, Dara’s sister. While there are resemblances between Dara’s character arc and Dawood, and similarities between Habiba and Haseena Parkar, the creators maintain that the series remains a work of fiction.
