Shivaratri, which comes in the month of Sawan, is very important. Although every month the monthly Shivaratri is celebrated on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha, but Shivaratri of Sawan is considered special. This year Sawan Shivaratri is today on Wednesday, 23 July 2025.
Date and worship time:
Chaturdashi date starts: July 23, 4:39 am
Chaturdashi date ends: July 24, 2:29 pm
Fasting time: July 24, till 5:38 am
On this day, Shiva devotees keep fast, worship and perform Jalabhishek and Rudrabhishek on Shivling. Shiva worship has special significance in all four ways. But if some things are not taken care of during the puja, then Shivji may be angry. So, know which 10 mistakes should not be made:
Do not make these 10 mistakes in Shiva worship:
Do not wear black clothes
Wear white- or light-colored clothes in Shiva Puja, avoid black clothes.
Do not offer basil leaves
It is forbidden to put basil on the Shivling, do not forget to offer it.
Do not use turmeric
Turmeric is not offered in Shiva worship. Offer milk, curd, white flowers, belpatra etc.
Do not offer mutilated bells
Belpatra should be clean and unattainable.
Do not offer broken rice
Only whole and white rice (Akshat) should be mounted on Shivling.
Do not offer water from the conch
It is forbidden to offer water from the conch on the Shivling. Also, do not offer milk from steel, iron or aluminum vessel.
Do not light an odd number
In the puja, light lamps in the number of numbers (eg 2, 4, 6) only.
Do not offer Ketki and Kevade flowers
These flowers are forbidden in Shiva worship, only use white flowers.
Do not revolve completely
Do not revolve around it while worshiping Shivling.
