The BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha in the United States welcome a significant legal development this week: the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for New Jersey decide to close the investigation into the construction of the BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham temple in Robbinsville, New Jersey. The inquiry, spark in 2021, had alleged that workers on the Akshardham project were exploit working under extremely low wages and harsh condition and bring lawsuits and media attention.

BAPS issued a statement saying the closure send a clear and powerful message confirming what the organization has always maintain: that the temple was build through devotion, volunteer service, and contributions from devotees from all walk of life. They express gratitude, while noting that these years of scrutiny was challenging for their community. The organization also said the temple stand as a symbol of Hindu community’s values in the U.S. faith, service, peace and that this outcome restore faith for devotees.

Critics and others had raise serious concerns over labor practices: the initial allegation involve claims that over 200 Indian workers, brought on religious visas, were made to work for about USD 1 an hour, under gruelling hours and risky condition. But with the DOJ decision to close the case without charges filed, BAPS feel vindicated. Community leader say this moment is important not just legally, but socially for narrative about religious institutions, immigration, worker right, and public trust.

While the legal chapter seem close for now, many reflect on the reputational impact these year have had on the temple, the community, and public perception. BAPS hope the future focus will return to the temple’s spiritual mission and its role as a cultural centre.
