US Envoy Steve Witkoff Heads to Europe for Gaza Ceasefire Talks with Israel and Qatar

U.S. President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, is set to visit Europe this week for discussions concerning the Israel-Gaza war and related regional matters, a U.S. official confirmed on Tuesday (July 22, 2025). Witkoff is expected to continue efforts toward securing a ceasefire in Gaza. According to Axios, he will leave for Rome on Wednesday and is scheduled to meet Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer and a senior Qatari official on Thursday (July 24). Should talks progress positively, Witkoff may then head to Doha later in the week to finalize a potential deal, sources from both the U.S. and Israel indicated. This diplomatic push is part of an international effort led by Qatar and Egypt, with U.S. support to broker a 60-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, amid worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza due to Israel’s military campaign.

Since the war began in October 2023, following a Hamas-led attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and led to 250 hostages, Israeli retaliatory strikes have reportedly killed over 59,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. A previous two-month ceasefire collapsed after Israeli airstrikes killed more than 400 Palestinians on March 18. The conflict has displaced Gaza’s entire population and triggered famine-like conditions. Israel is currently facing allegations of genocide at the International Court of Justice and war crimes at the International Criminal Court—claims it firmly denies.
