Pakistan’s Independence Day Turns from Celebration to Mourning: Three Killed, Dozens Injured in Aerial Firing

On the night of Independence Day in Karachi, reckless aerial firing resulted in the deaths of three people including a senior citizen and an 8-year-old girl while more than 60 others sustained gunshot injuries. The incidents were reported in various parts of the city, including Azizabad, Korangi, Lyari, and Baldia.

Victims Identified:
In Azizabad, an 8-year-old girl was killed by a stray bullet while she was inside her home. In Korangi, a man named Stephen, a senior citizen, was fatally struck by a bullet under ordinary circumstances, without any involvement in the events.

Response and Security Measures:
Police and local authorities strongly condemned the dangerous practice, calling it “reckless and hazardous,” and urged people to adopt safer ways of celebration. Search operations were conducted in several areas, leading to the arrest of more than 20 suspects and the seizure of weapons and ammunition.

Such incidents are not uncommon in Karachi. Earlier this year alone, similar firing incidents claimed the lives of 42 people and left 233 others injured. Often, these shootings occur under the guise of celebration, but also happen during looting incidents or personal disputes.
