Konkona Sen Sharma Inspires Anurag Basu’s Tribute to Irrfan Khan in Metro...In Dino
In Metro...In Dino, the spiritual sequel to Anurag Basu’s 2007 film Life in a Metro, a subtle yet meaningful tribute has been paid to the late Irrfan Khan. Konkona Sen Sharma, who starred in the original film and returned in the new one as a different character, suggested naming her on-screen partner Monty, a deliberate reference to Irrfan’s beloved character in the original. This connection bridges the two films, paying homage to Khan’s iconic role while preserving the new story’s unique identity.
Life in a Metro featured Konkona as Shruti, a woman navigating an arranged marriage, who falls for Monty, played by Irrfan Khan, a quirky and lovable man. In Metro...In Dino, Konkona’s character Kajal is paired opposite Pankaj Tripathi, whose character is also named Monty. Director Anurag Basu shared that the name wasn’t initially planned but was Konkona’s idea, proposed on the very first day of shooting. Basu welcomed the suggestion, emphasizing that although the name Monty is the same, the character itself is entirely different in nature.
Konkona explained her choice was inspired by the humorous and goofy charm of the original Monty character, which aligns with the light-hearted romance portrayed in Metro...In Dino. She believes the essence of the character’s approach to love connects both films, even if the stories diverge. Alongside Konkona and Pankaj Tripathi, the film also stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Ali Fazal, and others. Scheduled for release on July 4, Metro...In Dino continues Anurag Basu’s exploration of urban relationships while honoring the legacy of a beloved actor.
