Konkona Sen Sharma Calls for Policy Reform to Support Working Mothers
Actor Konkona Sen Sharma, who is preparing for the release of Anurag Basu’s Metro In Dino, recently opened up about the challenges of balancing professional and personal life, especially for women, in an interview with Firstpost.
Speaking candidly, Konkona highlighted the persistent gender gap in workplaces, saying, “There’s a phenomenon called the ‘fatherhood premium’ and the ‘motherhood penalty.’ As men advance in their careers and become fathers, they tend to earn more. But for women, having children often leads to financial setbacks because they’re unable to meet societal expectations or workplace demands in the same way.”
She emphasized that the increasing difficulty of balancing motherhood with a career is discouraging many women from having children. “Eventually, governments will need to reform policies for working mothers,” she said. “Without systemic change, the situation won’t improve.”
Konkona, who was previously married to actor Ranvir Shorey, shares a son, Haroon, with him.
Metro In Dino, slated to release on July 4, features a star-studded cast including Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Pankaj Tripathi, Neena Gupta, and Anupam Kher.
