IIM Sambalpur is playing a crucial role in shaping Odisha’s economic policy aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. In partnership with the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) and the University of Maryland, the institute is co-leading the Economic Transition Coalition Odisha (ETCO). This collaborative platform, involving academia, government, and industry, is focused on developing a comprehensive roadmap that balances economic growth, job creation, and environmental sustainability. The coalition recently released a white paper outlining Odisha’s long-term vision for a green and inclusive economy.

The white paper proposes a multi-dimensional approach centered on equitable income distribution, sustainable agriculture, climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and transitioning towards clean energy. A significant focus is placed on shifting the workforce in coal and thermal power sectors towards green technologies such as hydrogen energy, green steel, and carbon capture solutions. The strategy also highlights the potential of Odisha’s mineral resources and coastal location to develop a green manufacturing and export hub. To tackle climate risks, the coalition recommends investments in climate-resilient infrastructure and protection of biodiversity through ecological corridors.

Professor Mahadeo Jaiswal, Director of IIM Sambalpur, emphasized the expanding role of business schools in policy formulation beyond traditional teaching. This initiative aligns with India’s national objectives under the National Education Policy to foster interdisciplinary collaboration for sustainable development. As Odisha aims to become a leader in both economic growth and climate resilience, institutions like IIM Sambalpur are increasingly influential in steering the state towards a sustainable and inclusive future.
