Defence Ministry to Approve Key Military Acquisitions Post-Operation Sindoor

In the first meeting since the initiation of Operation Sindoor, the Ministry of Defence is poised to approve a number of significant acquisition projects aimed at strengthening the operational readiness of India’s armed forces. A senior Defence official confirmed on Monday, June 30, 2025, that the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) is scheduled to meet this week. This will be the Council’s first gathering since the high-profile military operation, and it carries considerable significance.

One of the key proposals on the table involves bolstering India’s air defence capabilities along the Pakistan border. The DAC is expected to clear the acquisition of three regiments of the indigenous Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) systems for the Indian Army. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), these systems will be manufactured by public sector defence units.

The Indian Air Force is also likely to seek approval for procuring three airborne platforms under the Intelligence, Surveillance, Targeting, and Reconnaissance (I-STAR) programme. According to the official, these aircraft will be vital for future missions focused on neutralizing ground-based threats. The platforms will be sourced from an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and will undergo modifications domestically by DRDO’s Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) in partnership with private industry.

Meanwhile, the Indian Navy is preparing to present a proposal for the induction of DRDO-developed pressure-based moored sea mines. These mines are designed to engage enemy submarines and surface warships. Additionally, the Council is expected to deliberate on a long-pending plan to upgrade 84 Su-30MKI fighter jets, a project that has already received preliminary approval.

Another major proposal up for discussion is the acquisition of autonomous underwater vehicles, aimed at enhancing the Navy’s underwater combat and surveillance capabilities.

This week’s meeting is being seen as a crucial moment in the ongoing post-Operation Sindoor modernization efforts across India’s defence forces.
