AAP MP Raghav Chadha Suspended, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Adjourned

Raghav Chadha, an AAP MP, was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for “gross violation of rule and misconduct” pending the Privileges Committee’s findings. Aside from that, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned sine die today, thereby ending the Monsoon session, which had been disrupted by disruptions over the Manipur violence problem.

The Lok Sabha passed revisions to the Central and Integrated GST legislation on Friday that will collect a 28% tax on the full face value of bets in online gaming, casinos, and horse race clubs. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tabled bills in the House on Friday, the last day of Parliament’s monsoon session, amid opposition protests over Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s suspension.

The Lok Sabha passed the Central Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Integrated Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2023, by voice vote without debate.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah tabled three bills in Lok Sabha aimed at revamping the country’s criminal justice system: the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita Bill, 2023; the Bharativa Nyaya Sanita Bill, 2023; and the Bharativa, Sakshva Bill, 2023.

The purpose of these Bills is to replace the existing 19th century Indian Penal Code, 1860, Criminal Procedure Code, 1898, and Indian Evidence Act, 1872. Shah said in LS that the present Sedition laws would be removed under the new Bill. He also stated that the Centre would enact a provision for capital penalty in cases of mob lynching.
