140 Private Universities Established in India in Last 5 Years

According to Ministry of Education data, 140 private institutions were founded across the country in the previous five years, with Gujarat having the most, followed by Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

According to statistics obtained by PTI, 28 private institutions have been built in Gujarat during the previous five years, while 15 universities have been formed in Maharashtra.

During the era, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka welcomed 14 and 10 universities, respectively.

“A private university is established by an Act passed by the State legislature concerned and notification issued by the State government concerned,” according to a senior Education Ministry official.

“The name of a private university is included in the list of universities by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as per Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, on receipt of the copies of the Act and notification from the university,” he said. Such private universities are empowered to award general degree programmes without the specific approval of the UGC, the official said.

“However, the approvals for running professional and medical programmes are given by the respective regulatory or statutory bodies, and such programmes are governed by the norms of respective bodies such as the All Indian Council for Technical Education, National Medical Commission, and the Dental Council of India,” he added.

In the previous five years, Chhattisgarh has seen the establishment of seven private institutions, while Jharkhand and Rajasthan have each seen the establishment of six.

Bihar, Odisha, Uttarakhand, and Telangana each founded five institutions, while Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Manipur, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, and Uttar Pradesh each established four.

“UGC consults with institutions and universities on a regular basis to ensure that the norms are followed.” “The GC has informed us that no major UGC violations have been reported against these institutions thus far,” the official added.

The largest number of private universities formed in the 2018-19 academic session was 40, with 34 institutions established during the 2021-22 academic session during the previous five years.
