PM Modi Launches ‘Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched on Monday the ‘Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana’, which would provide rooftop solar to one crore families across the country.

“All the devotees of the world always get energy from the light of Suryavanshi Lord Shri Ram. Today, on the auspicious occasion of consecration in Ayodhya, my resolution got further strengthened that the people of India should have their own solar roof top system on the roof of their houses,” the prime minister posted on social platform X.

“The first decision I have taken after returning from Ayodhya is that our government will launch “Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana” with the target of installing rooftop solar on 1 crore houses. This will not only reduce the electricity bill of the poor and middle class, but will also make India self-reliant in the energy sector,” he added.

The decision came hours after he returned from the temple town of Ayodhya, where he participated in the consecration ceremony of Lord Ram Lalla in the newly built Ram Janmabhoomi temple on Monday. PM Modi also posted pictures of him discussing the scheme with officials.

The initiative seeks to supply rooftop solar panels to one crore low- and middle-income families in order to generate power from solar energy.

The prime minister went on to say that the initiative would not only decrease the poor and middle classes’ power bills, but would also make India self-sufficient in the energy industry.

According to a Business Today article, Prime Minister Modi has instructed authorities to launch a big national push to encourage residential customers to adopt rooftop solar in significant numbers.

Rooftop solar panels are photovoltaic panels that are mounted on the roof of a building and connected to the main power supply unit. As a result, it reduces grid-connected power use and lowers consumer price of electricity.

A solar rooftop system requires just an upfront capital investment and has low maintenance cost.

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s website, India’s solar power installed capacity has reached around 73.31 GW as of December 2023. Meanwhile, rooftop solar installed capacity is estimated to be approximately 11.08 GW by December 2023. The Centre now operates a National Rooftop Scheme, which provides financial support equal to 40% of the capital cost of a solar roof setup.

The union government established the Rooftop Solar Programme in 2014 with the goal of achieving a total installed capacity of 40,000 megawatts (MW) or 40 gigawatts (GW) by 2022. A watt is a measure of electricity that is determined as the amount of energy utilized over time, particularly one Joule per second.
