Lok Sabha to Debate No-Confidence Motion Against NDA Government for 3 Days

The Lok Sabha has scheduled a three-day debate on the no-confidence motion against the NDA government, beginning on August 8 and concluding on August 10. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to provide his response on the last day of the discussion.

Background of the No-Confidence Motion:

The no-confidence motion was tabled by the Congress, demanding that PM Modi addresses Parliament on the ethnic clashes in Manipur that occurred in May. The violence between the majority Meitei group and the tribal Kuki minority resulted in at least 130 deaths and the displacement of tens of thousands of people.

Business Advisory Committee Meeting:

During the business advisory committee meeting, the opposition bloc INDIA and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi boycotted the meeting. They insisted on an immediate discussion of the motion and protested the government’s push for its legislative agenda. However, the government asserted that there are no mandatory rules or precedence requiring an immediate consideration of the no-confidence motion.

Acceptance of the Motion:

On July 26, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla accepted the no-confidence motion moved by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi against the Modi government. A headcount of over 50 MPs, as required under the rules, was attained to support the motion.

Previous No-Confidence Motion:

This marks the second time the Modi government faces a no-confidence motion since it came to power in 2014. The first motion, moved on July 20, 2018, resulted in a decisive victory for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), with 325 MPs voting against the motion and only 126 supporting it.

As the Lok Sabha prepares for the debate on the no-confidence motion, all eyes are on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response. The discussion holds significant importance as it addresses crucial issues and concerns raised by the opposition against the government.
