US President Joe Biden has requested assistance from former President Barack Obama in his bid to win a second term in the 2024 presidential election. This comes as a tight race is anticipated, with Donald Trump expected to be the Republican nominee once again.
The Washington Post reported that in June, Biden and Obama had a private lunch at the White House, during which Obama pledged to do all he could to support Biden’s re-election campaign. Given Obama’s popularity within the Democratic party, Biden was eager to secure his backing.
Biden previously served as Obama’s vice president from 2009 to 2017, though their relationship has been complex, with reports indicating that Obama was initially hesitant to endorse Biden during his third presidential bid in 2020.
The 80-year-old President Biden clinched the Democratic nomination and won the 2020 election with substantial support from African American voters and Obama’s campaign efforts. Despite Trump’s refusal to concede and the Capitol attack, Biden won by a significant margin in both popular votes and electoral college votes.
Joe Biden’s presidency has been marked by various challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, economic difficulties, political polarization, and Russian aggression towards Ukraine. Although he has achieved significant successes, his approval ratings have remained relatively low.
In a recent book, author Jonathan Martin and Alex Burns revealed that Biden expressed confidence that Obama was not entirely satisfied with the media portrayal of his administration as more transformative than Obama’s own.
Both Joe Biden’s campaign spokesperson and an Obama adviser did not directly comment on the June lunch. However, Joe Biden’s team expressed gratitude for Obama’s unwavering support and looks forward to campaigning side-by-side once again to secure victory in the 2024 election and deliver for the American people.
