At IIT-BHU, hundreds of students staged protests in response to reports that three anonymous men had kissed and assaulted a female student on campus. The incident took place near the student’s hostel, and the three bike-borne men also recorded a video of the act.
Protesting students are demanding that outsiders be prohibited from entering the campus, claiming that persons from outside were involved in the incident. They have also advocated for the construction of a wall dividing the campus of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
Following a discussion with student representatives, the institute announced that it will take the Ministry of Education up on the idea of a closed campus.
“The institute shall actively pursue with the Ministry of Education and the University administration for the creation of a closed campus with restricted entry,” the Registrar of BHU stated in a statement.
Additionally, the registrar announced that additional CCTVs will soon be placed on campus and that security has been reinforced. According to the institute, there will be restrictions on student movement from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
According to a complaint lodged by the woman, she was allegedly assaulted when she was out with a friend on Wednesday night. They were near the Karman Baba temple when three men came there on a motorcycle and forcibly took her to a corner and gagged her after separating her from her friend.
After stripping the victim, the accused recorded a video of her and took pictures of her. The complaint said that after fifteen minutes, they let her go and grabbed her phone number.
To maintain safety on campus, police stated that in addition to conducting an investigation, they are collaborating with the university administration.
