ASER 2023 Report Highlights Digital Access and Educational Challenges Among Rural Youth

The Pratham Foundation, an NGO, issued its Annual Status of Education Report (ASER 2023) on Wednesday in New Delhi. The ASER 2023 study, titled “Beyond Basics,” focuses on youth aged 14 to 18 in rural India, the same age group that was the subject of the ASER 2017 research.

According to the official news release, the ASER 2023 report focuses on the following domains:

(1) What activities are India’s youth currently engaged in?

(2) Do they have basic and applied reading and math abilities?

(3) Do they have access to smartphones? What do they use smartphones for, and can they do simple tasks on their smartphones?

For the intensive survey, studies in 28 districts across 26 states were carried out which resulted in the interaction with 34,745 youth in the age group 14-18 years.

Except for Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, where two rural districts were surveyed, every other major state had one rural district surveyed for the ASER 2023 report, mentioned the press release.

The ASER 2023 research indicated that 86.8% of 14-18-year-olds are enrolled in an educational institution, with the percentage of adolescents not enrolled being 3.9% for 14-year-olds and 32.6% for 18-year-olds.

According to the ASER 2023 research, around 25% of young people aged 14 to 18 still struggle to read a standard II-level text proficiently in their regional language. Across enrollment groups, girls (76%) outperform boys (70.9%) when reading a Std II level text in their regional language.

According to the ASER 2023 assessment, about 90% of the children between the ages of 14 and 18 have digital access.

When it comes to digital access for adolescents aged 14 to 18, the ASER 2023 research finds that over 90% of all youth have a smartphone in their family and understand how to use it.

Males (43.7%) are more than twice as likely to own a smartphone as girls (19.8%), according to a Pratham Foundation survey.
