Lok Sabha Polls 2024 Phase 3: Assam Records Highest Voter Turnout at 81%, UP Lowest - Key Takeaways

Tuesday marked the end of the third round of voting in the 93 Lok Sabha seats, which are spread across 10 states and two Union territories. The Election Commission reports that the voter turnout in the third phase was 64.4%, which was lower than the turnout in the first two phases (66.14 and 66.71 percent, respectively). Uttar Pradesh had the lowest voter turnout, while Assam had the highest.

The Lok Sabha elections are being held in seven phases – with the first three phases concluded on April 19, April 26, and May 7. The fourth phase will be held on May 13, the fifth phase on May 20, the sixth phase on May 25, and the seventh phase on June 1. The result for all the Lok Sabha seats will be declared on June 4.

Here are the key takeaways from the Phase 3 of the Lok Sabha polling:

  1. According to the Election Commission data updated on Tuesday night, Assam, in the third phase of voting for the Lok Sabha election, recorded a voter turnout of 81.61 per cent, followed by West Bengal at 75.79 per cent, Goa at 75.20 per cent, Chhattisgarh at 71.06 per cent, Karnataka at 70.41 per cent, Maharashtra at 66.05 per cent, Madhya Pradesh at 66.05 per cent, Gujarat at 58.98 per cent, Bihar at 58.18 per cent, and the lowest in Uttar Pradesh at 57.34 per cent.
  2. The Election Commission, in a statement, said that the third phase of polling was held smoothly and peacefully in all states and union territories, including in the naxal-affected areas in Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
  3. The EC ordered re-polling at a polling booth in Rajasthan’s Barmer on Wednesday due to a breach of vote confidentiality. Four members of the polling party have also been suspended in this case.
  4. According to the EC, at least 75 international delegates from 23 countries visited several polling stations in six states during the polling process. “The delegates witnessed the process of dispatching polling materials and machines to the polling teams and were appreciative of the magnitude, transparency and, most importantly, the festive mood of voters,” the EC said, reported PTI.
  5. A total of 1,331 candidates, including 120 women, were in the electoral fray in the third phase. Some of the key candidates included bigwigs such as union ministers Amit Shah, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Mansukh Mandaviya, Parshottam Rupala, Pralhad Joshi, and SP Singh Baghel. Former Madhya Pradesh chief ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Digvijaya Singh also contested the election in Madhya Pradesh, while several members of Mulayam Singh Yadav’s family also contested in Uttar Pradesh.
  6. Several officials across the country came up with innovative bids to entice voters and urge them to exercise their franchise. The Shimoga Zilla Panchayat in Karnataka had a polling booth with majestic thrones reserved for voters. At the same time, proprietors of an ice cream shop in the Hubbali city of Dharwad offered ice creams free of charge to voters.
  7. Meanwhile, food shops in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore offered free poha, jalebis, and ice cream to those who cast their votes in the early hours of polling. In Maharashtra, several food establishments offered discounts to customers with ink marks on their fingers.

Air India Express Hit by Crew ‘Mass Sick Leave’: 86 Flights Cancelled

Air India Express Hit by Crew 'Mass Sick Leave': 86 Flights Cancelled

According to government sources, at least 86 Air India Express flights were cancelled when cabin staff members went on “mass sick leave” on Wednesday. The international and domestic flights were cancelled after around 300 senior cabin crew members reported being unwell at the last minute and turned off their mobile phones.

Air India Express management is now attempting to contact the crew, who are protesting the new job terms at the Tata Group-owned airline, according to reports.

“A section of our cabin crew has reported sick at the last minute, starting last night, resulting in flight delays and cancellations. While we are engaging with the crew to understand the reasons behind these occurrences, our teams are actively addressing this issue to minimise any inconvenience caused to our guests as a result,” an Air India Express spokesperson said.

“We sincerely apologise to our guests for this unexpected disruption and emphasise that this situation does not reflect the standard of service we strive to provide,” the spokesperson added.

Guests impacted by cancellations will be offered a full refund or complimentary rescheduling to another date, the airline said.

Several passengers took to their social media accounts and complained about the sudden cancellations of their flights. They said that they had “no information” about the cancellations.

Some “very disappointed” passengers on X said that they had reached the airport when they were informed that their flights were cancelled.

“We apologise for any inconvenience. Please be informed that your flight has been cancelled due to operational reasons,” Air India Express said in response to one of the posts on X.

Why Air India Express Crew Is Protesting

According to sources, the crew at the Air India Express has alleged that there was a lack of equality in the treatment of the staff after the merger with Tata Group.

They claim that some staff members were offered lower job positions despite clearing interviews.

The crew has also alleged that the key parts of the compensation package have been modified or removed and that the airline management is shutting down the dissenting voices, sources said.

The airline is currently also in the process of merging AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India) with itself.

The crisis at Air India Express comes a month after Tata Group full-service carrier Vistara witnessed cancellations due to pilot woes.

Discontentment had simmered among pilots at Vistara, which is in the process of getting merged with Air India, following the new contracts wherein there were concerns on rosters for pilots operating flights and a component of their salary packages.

Kharge Writes to Allies, Raises Issue of ECI’s Delay in Releasing Poll Data

0
Kharge

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday wrote a letter to the INDIA allies expressing concerns over alleged delay in the publishing of electoral data and urged the parties to work “collectively and unitedly” to ensure the independence of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Kharge said the delay in publishing the final voting percentages for the first and second phases “raises serious doubts on the quality of data” and it is extremely disconcerting to know, through various media reports, that even the final registered voters list from the third phase onwards is also not released.

“It is in public domain on how the ECI, perhaps for the first time in history, delayed the release of the final voting percentages of the First and Second phase of the Lok Sabha elections…On earlier occasions the Commission has published voter turnout data within 24 hours of polling. What has changed this time? Why has the Commission failed to issue any clarification to justify the delay, despite being repeatedly questioned by political parties as well as political activists? Is there an issue with the EVMs?” Kharge said.

He also said that in his electoral life of 52 years, he has never witnessed such a high increment of voting percentages in the final published data.

He pointed out that in the first phase the EC said “that as on 7pm on 19.04.2024, the estimated voter turnout was around 60%, while similarly for the Second Phase (88 Seats), the estimated voter turnout was around 60.96 %. Why is it that on 20.04.2024, the Commission’s projected voter turnout for the First Phase was increased to 65.5% and on 27.04.2024, for the Second Phase the voter turnout data increased to 66.7%. Finally on 30.04.2024, the figures were confirmed at 66.14% for the First Phase and 66.71% for the Second Phase?”

“We ask the Commission – For First Phase, why is there a near increase of ~5.5% in the final voter turnout from date of conclusion of voting (at 7pm on 19.04.2024) to the delayed release of voter turnout data (On 30.04.2024)? For Second Phase, there is a near increase of more than ~5.74% in the final voter turnout from the date of conclusion of voting (at 7pm on 26.04.2024) to the delayed release of data (On 30.04.2024)?” he said.

He also pointed out that apart from the delay, the voter turnout data released by the Commission does not mention crucial figures such as the votes polled in each Parliamentary Constituency and in the respective Assembly Constituencies. “If the voter turnout data was published within 24 hours of voting along with the crucial figures, then we would have known if the increase (of ~5%) had been witnessed across constituencies? Or only in constituencies where the ruling regime had not performed well in the 2019 elections?” he wrote.

Kharge demanded that the EC should have not only released the data per Parliamentary Constituency (and respective Assembly Constituencies) but it should have also released the voter turnout data in each polling station. “In fact, with each polling station, Assembly Constituency and Parliamentary, should also mention/publish the complaints which may have been filed by the Political Party?” he added.

“As per the ECI, the Polling Agents of the Candidates have the exact voter turnout data of each polling station. It means that the Commission also has the requisite data of the voter turnout for each polling station; now our question to them is what exactly is precluding the Commission from publishing the same for the people?” he said in the letter.

There was no immediate reaction from the ECI to Kharge’s charges.

Kharge further said, “All these developments cast a dark shadow on the functioning of the Election Commission of India – an institution built with the collective efforts of the Indian State and its people,” he said.

“All the aforementioned facts force us to ask a question – could this be an attempt to doctor the final results?” he added.

He said with recent developments, the credibility of the Election Commission of India (ECI) is at an all-time low and urged the INDIA allies to collectively question the Election Commission on “Why did the Commission delay the release of voter turnout data?”

He maintained that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is the fight to save democracy and the Constitution and reminded the leaders about the alliance’s “collective endeavour” to safeguard democracy and protect the independent functioning of the Election Commission.

“I would urge all of you that we must collectively, unitedly and unequivocally raise our voice against such discrepancies, for our only objective is to protect the culture of a vibrant Democracy and the Constitution. Let us ensure the independence of the Election Commission of India and make it accountable,” he said.

Shekhar Suman Makes Political Debut, Joins BJP

Shekhar Suman Makes Political Debut, Joins BJP

Actor and TV celebrity Shekhar Suman has joined the BJP on the day of the third round of the Lok Sabha elections, giving the party a boost.

On Tuesday, Mr Suman addressed the media at the party headquarters in the presence of senior BJP leaders such as National General Secretary Vinod Tawde and National Media Department In-Charge Anil Baluni, saying he had no idea he would be taking this step until yesterday and thanked God for ordering him to do so.

“Even I did not know till yesterday that I would be sitting here. A lot of things happen in life. Sometimes you don’t know what you are supposed to do and you get a direction from above and you follow it. I have come here with a positive outlook and I would like to thank God for directing me to come here,” he said in Hindi.

“You have to follow what Lord Ram has thought. I don’t have any negative thoughts, I am thinking only about the country. A man depends on his words but they have no meaning beyond a point. But there is a difference between saying something and doing it. I can give a long address but it will mean anything only after I have done something,” the actor added, and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP chief JP Nadda, among others.

Radhika Khera, who was the national coordinator of the Congress’ media department and had quit the party on Sunday, also joined the BJP along with Mr Suman.

Vladimir Putin Set to Be Sworn In for Record 5th Term as Russian President

Putin Set to Be Sworn In for Record 5th Term as Russian President

Russian President Vladimir Putin will be sworn in at a spectacular ceremony in the Kremlin on Tuesday, beginning a record-breaking fifth term with greater power than ever before. The 71-year-old Kremlin head has dominated Russia since the turn of the century, obtaining a new six-year term in March after winning presidential elections with no opposition.

The inauguration will be shown live on most major Russian television stations beginning about noon (0900 GMT), when a luxurious motorcade transports Putin to Moscow’s Grand Kremlin Palace.

After arriving, he will walk through the palace corridors to the ornate Saint Andrew Hall, where he will take the presidential oath and make a brief address to Russians.

Government officials and foreign diplomats in Moscow have been invited to the ceremony, including French Ambassador Pierre Levy, who is expected to attend.

Other European countries including Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic have signalled that they will not send representatives amid soured tensions over the conflict in Ukraine.

Putin’s 87 percent landslide victory in the presidential election was criticized by most international observers and dismissed as rigged by opposition and rights groups.

The inauguration comes two days before Russia marks Victory Day on May 9, an event that has taken on renewed symbolism as Putin compares his offensive in Ukraine to Russia’s fight against Nazi Germany in World War II.

Authorities have erected barriers throughout Moscow’s city centre ahead of both events.

Putin kicks off his six-year term emboldened by advances on the battlefield in Ukraine and sustained economic growth, despite a barrage of Western sanctions.

On the domestic front, he saw off a rebellion last June from paramilitary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin — who later died in a plane crash — and in February his main political rival Alexei Navalny died in prison.

His victory in March means that he is likely to become the longest-serving ruler of Russia in a century, beating out Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

Russia’s army held off a much-hyped Ukrainian counter-offensive last year, and it has since made gains on the front lines as Kyiv struggles with ammunition and manpower shortages.

But as the conflict stretches into a third year without an obvious resolution and the economy teeters towards overheating, Putin faces significant challenges in his fifth term.

Inflation — a historic source of angst amongst the Russian population — remains persistent as Moscow adopts what analysts have called a “military Keynesianism”, pouring billions of resources into the war effort.

The Kremlin has also failed to quell fears it will announce a new round of unpopular mobilisation in Putin’s new term, and discontent among the wives of men who have been drafted continues to simmer.

Some analysts have suggested Putin may use the inauguration to shake up his government, which is obligated to resign ahead of a new presidential term.

Israeli Tanks Enter Rafah, Take Control Of Key Gaza Crossing

Israeli Tanks Enter Rafah, Take Control Of Key Gaza Crossing
Israeli Tanks Enter Rafah, Take Control Of Key Gaza Crossing (NBC News)

On Tuesday, the Israeli army announced that it had taken “operational control” of the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt, and that forces were examining the area.

“Last night, IDF (army) troops managed to establish operational control of the Gazan side of the (Rafah) crossing,” the major entrance point for assistance delivery to the beleaguered enclave, according to a military report.

“Right now at the moment what’s happening, we have operational control over the Gazan side of Rafah crossing, and we have special forces scanning the area to find additional terror infrastructure or terrorists,” the military stated.

“The operation is not over yet. It’s ongoing.”

The military said ground troops were carrying out an operation in eastern Rafah.

“Overnight, IDF ground troops began a precise counterterrorism operation based on IDF and ISA (the Israeli Security Agency, Shin Bet) intelligence to eliminate Hamas terrorists and dismantle Hamas terrorist infrastructure within specific areas of eastern Rafah,” the statement said.

In the briefing, it said troops were engaged in a “very targeted operation and a very limited scope against very specific targets” in eastern Rafah.

On Monday, Israel ordered residents of eastern Rafah to evacuate and move to a “humanitarian zone” northwest of the city, a day after rocket fire by militants killed four soldiers and wounded several more at the Kerem Shalom crossing between Israel and the Palestinian territory.

The military said that since the start of its operation in eastern Rafah, it had killed 20 operatives.

It released video footage showing a tank rolling through the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing.

An Israeli flag is seen in the area, while drone footage showed several tanks.

“A vast amount of the organisation and the people in the area within (which) we gave the evacuation notice yesterday (Monday) moved to a safer zone,” the military said.
