5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Afghanistan, Sends Tremors Across Delhi-NCR, Jammu & Kashmir, and Pakistan

The center of the earthquake was located at Latitude 36.38 and Longitude 70.77, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake struck at a depth of 181 km.

On Saturday late evening at around 9:30pm, tremors were reported in areas of Delhi-NCR and adjacent regions, Jammu & Kashmir, and on the borders of Afghanistan and Pakistan after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan.

The tremors were also felt in Rajouri, Srinagar, and Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as in the Katra region, the base camp of the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, and in Pakistani cities such as Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar.

Following the tremor, many allegedly fled their homes in fear.

The epicentre of the earthquake was situated at 36.38 degrees north latitude and 70.77 degrees east longitude in Afghanistan’s Hindukush area, according to the National Centre for Seismology.

“The quake struck twice at around 9:30 p.m.,” Preeti Shankar, who lives in a high-rise condominium in Noida on the national capital’s eastern outskirts, told news agency PTI.

Earthquakes occur often in Afghanistan, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which is located near the confluence of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.

On Saturday, Jammu and Kashmir was shaken by a third earthquake.

Previously, the region was rocked by earthquakes in Pakistan and the Hindu Kush region at 8.36 and 10.24 a.m., respectively.

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck Jammu and Kashmir’s Gulmarg at 8:36 a.m. today, with a depth of around 129 kilometres, according to NCS.

The epicentre was located at Latitude: 35.46 and Longitude: 73.32, according to NCS. “Earthquake of Magnitude:5.2, Occurred on 05-08-2023, 08:36:01 IST, Lat: 35.46 & Long: 73.32, Depth: 129 Km, Location: 184 km NNW of Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir,” the NCS stated on Twitter.

There were no casualties or material damage recorded in the morning.

In addition, an earthquake of 4.3 magnitude struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the early hours of Thursday, according to the NCS.
