The Telangana government has officially implemented the Telangana Scheduled Castes (Rationalisation of Reservations) Act, 2025, with April 14 designated as the effective date. A gazette notification marks the operational rollout of categorizing Scheduled Castes (SC) into three groups, making Telangana the first Indian state to act on the Supreme Court's landmark August 1, 2024 ruling that upheld the legality of sub-classifying SCs and STs for targeted reservations.

The classification is based on comprehensive data covering the social, economic, educational, employment, and political conditions of SC communities. As per the notification, the 15 most backward sub-castes, comprising just 0.5% of the population, will receive 1% reservation under Group I. Group II includes 18 sub-castes with limited access to opportunities, granted 9% reservation, while 26 relatively better-off sub-castes from Group-III with 5%.

A Cabinet sub-committee led by Ministers N. Uttam Kumar Reddy and C. Damodar Rajanarsimha presented the gazette to CM A. Revanth Reddy. The categorisation will apply to future government job recruitments but not existing vacancy notifications. The state also plans to revisit SC reservations post-Census 2026 based on updated data.
