Vice President Dhankhar Resigns Citing Health Reasons, Sparks Political Speculation

The sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday evening has stirred political circles nationwide, catching both the BJP and the Opposition off guard. Dhankhar, aged 74, stepped down citing health reasons and handed over his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu with immediate effect. He had assumed office in August 2022 and was set to serve until 2027.

Known for his often combative interactions with the Opposition, Dhankhar’s tenure included a rare and unsuccessful impeachment attempt. His abrupt departure has raised eyebrows, with many leaders doubting the official health-related explanation. The Congress and other parties praised his advocacy for farmers and appealed for him to reconsider.

JMM MP Mahua Maji told ANI the news was shocking and unexpected, suggesting there might be more behind the decision. Congress MP Mallu Ravi also expressed disbelief, saying Dhankhar showed no visible signs of illness during a recent two-day Rajya Sabha session, adding that his exit may be politically timed ahead of the Bihar elections.

Congress leader Udit Raj pointed to ongoing issues like the Operation Sindoor investigation and concerns over Bihar’s voter rolls, suggesting Dhankhar’s presence was critical. Meanwhile, Danish Ali speculated the resignation could be part of a broader political strategy to pressure Prime Minister Modi to step down before turning 75.

NCP (SP) leader Anish Gawande highlighted that Dhankhar is only the third Vice President in India’s history to resign, and noted the prior two resignations preceded presidential terms—hinting at possible future political developments.

The Congress officially urged PM Modi to persuade Dhankhar to withdraw his resignation. Jairam Ramesh called the resignation “inexplicable” and hinted at deeper, undisclosed reasons. He added that Dhankhar had planned key meetings and announcements related to the judiciary in the coming days.

Alongside political speculation, several leaders expressed personal support and admiration for Dhankhar. Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal recalled a decades-long relationship and described Dhankhar as a nationalist and patriot who wished for unity between government and Opposition. P. Chidambaram, Waris Pathan, and CPI MP P Sandosh Kumar also conveyed best wishes and concern, with Kumar noting the decision came as a surprise and might stem from dissatisfaction with recent developments.
