During a press meeting, former U.S. President Donald Trump strongly defended his use of tariffs as a main tool of American foreign policy, saying that it had stopped wars even between India and Pakistan. When he was asked if he would change his tariff policy if he didn’t had presidential power, he stayed firm on his stand.

Trump told reporters, “If I didn’t have the power of tariffs, you would have at least four of the seven wars going on. I use tariffs to stop wars.” He also said that in the case of India and Pakistan, the situation had become so bad that seven planes were shooted down, but his tariff policy helped to stop more fighting.

He also called the U.S. a “peacekeeper” because of tariffs, saying, “We are a peacekeeper because of tariffs. Not only we make hundreds of billions of dollars, but we are a peacekeeper because of tariffs.” These statements are similar to what he said earlier in GOP meetings, where he claimed that he had “stopped many wars” using tariff pressure.

However, Trump’s claims faced doubts and pushback from different sides. India said that any calming of tensions with Pakistan happened through diplomatic talks and direct military communication, not because of outside economic moves. The Indian government has many times said that no foreign leader influenced its national decisions.

The tension between India and Pakistan had again increased earlier this year after a terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir’s Anantnag district that killed 26 people. In response, India started Operation Sindoor, striking terror bases in Pakistan and PoK. Pakistan replied with drones and missiles, but Indian defense systems managed to shoot them down. In Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made it clear that India took its decision independently and not under any outside pressure.

Trump’s strong statements about tariffs opens up a bigger question: are tariffs really a fair way to stop conflicts, or just an overblown political claim? As discussions go on, experts and critics will be watching closely to see if his words match with reality and if tariffs truly play any role in keeping global peace.
